Green social prescribing encompasses a very wide range of activities from exercise in parks to contemplation in nature. The National Forest Gardening Scheme exists to promote (temperate) forest gardens in publicly accessible places and has a growing interest in green social prescribing as a way to encourage more people to engage in forest gardening. The NFGS considers that the key elements of community forest gardening are; the social element – communal/collective gardening, hands on nature connection – working with nature, learning and mindfulness, growing and eating healthy food – nutrition/health and exercise that can be undertaken at a level that can be tailored to suit fitness. It is because of the completeness of this form of green intervention that it can meet the 5 ways to well-being, and therefore the NFGS feels it offers a particularly powerful form of green social prescription.
